Partial Die Cut Interlocking Valentine's Card

I challenged myself to create an interlocking card without the use of a special die that creates this specific mechanism for a card. I am using a Lawn Fawn Stitched Heart die. I measured the heart at its widest. I used a 12" x 6" card stock. The card turned out to be a bit larger than an A2 card. The card measures  4.5" x 5".

I partially die cut half of the heart to each edge of the card stock. To line up the heart, I used a scrap heart die cut as a guide for the metal die. I lined this heart die cut to the back of the partially die cut heart with a washi tape facing the uncut end of the cardstock. I gently removed this die cut after I positioned the metal die on top of it. I ran this through the Big Shot also using partial die cut technique. I trimmed off the cardstock hanging on both ends of the heart with a craft knife. I cut the each half heart partially, one from the top, and the other on the bottom to create the interlocking mechanism. I scored the card with the hearts interlocked.

To embellish the card, I cut a pink card stock to fit the gateway panel of the card. Using a piece of tape at the back of this card stock, I randomly stamped a sentiment to create a background. Taping it together created a continuous piece even if these are two pieces. I am using an old Paper Studio stamp set, and Simon Says Stamp Doll Pink dye ink to create a tone on tone look. I spritz this with some shimmer spray made of Pearl Perfect Pearl diluted in water.

To embellish the heart, I cut an American Crafts patterned paper using the same die cut, then cut it in half. I adhered the card stock and heart to the interlocking card base. Make sure you use a thick card stock for the card base. The mechanism is so fragile that it can get ripped off if you keep playing with it. (Ask me how I know? =)) I cut the excess from the heart and the gatefold edges.

For the star of this card, I printed the birds on Neenah card stock. I flipped one bird to create a mirror image. I colored the birds with Prisma color pencils. I applied clear Spectrum Noir to the birds I fuzzy cut the image. I adhered a bird to half of a heart. I applied Ranger Glossy Accents to the eyes.

This card is pretty much done except that it is missing a sentiment. So with my 10 year old son's input, I stamped a sentiment at the bottom of the heart. I applied a washi tape at the back of the front panel to keep the gatefold closed. I heat embossed a sentiment from Hero Arts Floral Heart stamp and die set. And as last detail, I stamped a small heart to fill in the spaces using Delicata White Shimmer pigment ink.

Interlocking Rainbow Card

Interactive cards are such a joy to receive and also create. I challenged myself to create an interlocking card using some Paper Smooches supplies I have at hand.

I started off by creating a tri-fold card. I scored an 11" x 4 1/4" cardstock at 2 1/16" & 8 15/16" or to make it easy, rotate the card and score it at 2 1/16". I adhered a slightly smaller patterned paper and leave a small white border around the front folds. I embossed the outer ends of this patterned paper with Lawn Fawn Stitched Borders. I like to line the impressions to prevent doubling. Despite my planning, I ended with a jagged edge. I didn't want to waste the paper, plus, I liked the look it created so I trimmed a sliver off the edges to re-create this jagged look. Let's just say this was a happy accident.

I am using the PS Rainbow die to create the interlocking mechanism of the card. I colored each layer using Tim Holtz Distress Crayons. It is my first time to play with these crayons. So far, I like the creamy texture of it.

The PS Rainbow die cuts 6 layers of the rainbow, no solid piece. I traced the die on a piece of cardstock and cut this to create a solid piece that will be adhered to the back of the rainbow layers to make it sturdy. I had to divide the 6 layers into 2 groups and trace this grouping onto the solid rainbow piece. I cut on this line. I adhered this to the back of the 2 groupings of rainbow layers, the top 3 and the bottom 3.

I stamped the clouds from PS Spectrum stamp set on vellum using Versamark ink. I mirror stamped the cloud using the Misti Tool. I embossed these images using Wow! Pearl White embossing powder. I also sprtiz a white pearl Prima Color Bloom on these clouds. I dried it very briefly with the heat gun to control the warping of the vellum. I fuzzy cut these clouds.

Here is where the interlocking mechanism gets created. I adhered the top rainbow layer to the top fold and the bottom rainbow layer to the bottom fold. I used Tombow Extreme adhesive to make sure the mechanism elements will not fail. I applied adhesive to the top part of the top rainbow and to the ends of the bottom rainbow, making sure that there is only adhesive where the rainbow and the card base come in contact.

I adhered the vellum to the bottom of the rainbows. I just dab some glue on areas where there is embossing on the front to hide the glue.

I also did mirror stamping with the bird stamp from the PS Woofers & Tweeters stamp set. This time, I had difficulty stamping the mirror image using the Misti Tool and Versafine ink. Despite multiple attempts, I cannot get a crisp mirror impression of the bird. I embossed this image with black embossing powder over Versafine ink just to make the lines crisp. I colored the birds with TH Distress Crayons and fuzzy cut it.

For the sentiment, I used the rainbow die as a guide to curve this one line sentiment from PS Sentiment Sampler. I embossed this with Wow! Platinum Sparkle powder. I adhered the birds with foam tape. I applied clear of Wink of Stella to the birds. I adhered some Pretty Pink Posh sequins as added embellishment.

I rarely embellish the inside of the card but since this card is a friend, it wasn't hard to come up with an idea on how to embellish this part of the card. I cut an old Authentique patterned paper at 5 1/4" x 4". Using the Lawn Fawn Stitched Borders to emboss the outer edges of the panel. Just make sure the die is matched to the embossed pattern to have a continuous pattern. Though with this technique, you'll end up trimming off a sliver off the edges to make the embossed patterns close to the edge of the paper. This is where those shaped dies with patterns really come in handy.

I stamped the clouds onto this panel using Hero Arts Ombre Pool to Navy ink. I did the 'cha-cha' technique of transferring the ink to the clear stamp. I created a mask of the cloud so I can create a cluster of clouds. I stamped the sentiment from Paper Smooches Denim & Daisies, and Sentiment Sampler stamp sets. I used Versamark ink and embossed these sentiments using the same Wow! embossing powder. I colored the clouds with Copics to darken the clouds and create additional texture. I adhere this to the inside of the card.
